Many of the prices for materials used in glass and glazing manufacturing in July 2019 were up on both a monthly and year-over-year basis according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In July, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category grew 0.4% from the previous month, and 0.7% from July 2018. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification reversed the downward trend of previous months, increasing 0.7% from June 2019. It’s up 1.3% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

Prices for fabricated structural metal products grew 0.1% in July, following a 1.1% drop from May to June. That index, in the commodity grouping, is up 1% for the year. The index for ornamental and architectural metal work manufacturing, in the industry category, was unchanged in July. However, it has experienced a 2.3% increase since July 2018.

The PPI for metal windows is unchanged from its June 2019 level, making it the second consecutive month without movement. However, it’s up 8.3% from the July 2018 report. The price for metal doors and frames was also unchanged in July but the category is up 3.4% for the year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in glass and glazing, increased 0.1% from June to July and 3% from July 2018.
