An iconic glass structure in Manhattan is coming down—at least for now.

The City of New York approved plans to remove Apple’s “Glass Cube” structure at its Fifth Avenue flagship store, according to building permits published by BuildZoom. The permit, issued under the remodeling/alteration categories, was dated April 17 and calls for the “full removal of [the] glass cubical structure at [the] apple store entrance.”

Englewood, N.J.-based Waldorf Exteriors LLC is listed as the contractor for the project, which is valued at $2 million.

The 32-foot-tall structure’s removal is part of an ongoing renovation of the store, which is being expanded to twice its original size. It has not been announced whether the glass cube will be reconstructed or if it will be replaced upon completion of the renovation.

Apple representatives did not respond to USGNN.com™’s request for comment as of press time.

The tech giant is expanding the store from 32,000 square feet to 77,000 square feet, according to MacRumors. “We look forward to creating an incredible new Apple Fifth Avenue, where our customers will enjoy new services and experiences in a much larger space,” reads a statement from the company earlier this year.

This won’t be the first time the structural glass assembly temporarily disappeared from the site. In 2011, Apple replaced the original 90-lite glass cube structure, built in 2006, with a more streamlined one consisting of just 15 lites. The company was awarded a patent for the design in 2014.
